Study Skills and Academic Strategies Specifically Designed to Assist the Student with ADHD

Welcome to ‘Better Grades with ADHD’. My name is Dr. Joshua Shifrin and I will be your instructor for this course. I am a licensed psychologist, a diplomate of the American Board of School Neuropsychology, a Nationally Certified School Psychologist, an ADHD – Certified Clinical Services Provider, and I too have struggled for years with symptoms of ADHD.

After suffering for years with focusing difficulties, I eventually learned how to better cope with some of my symptoms. I now specialize in pediatric neuropsychological evaluations, and a large part of my practice is working with students that struggle with inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity, or a combination of both…aka, ADHD.

It always upsets me when many of my patients who are struggling academically falsely believe that they are incapable of doing well in school. In reality, many individuals with ADHD have average, or above-average intelligence. They just need specialized techniques in order to reach their potential. After conducting a great deal of research, I have noticed that there are many resources for individuals with ADHD. There are also many books and tutorials to assist with study skills. However, there is a true lack of information to assist students with ADHD specifically with their unique academic needs. I have therefore made it my mission to help students, just like you, get better grades and reach their academic goals.

Throughout this course, we will be discussing many of the areas that plague the ADHD student such as, reading, mathematics, writing, listening, goal setting, note-taking, studying, concentrating, memorization, test-taking, procrastination, and much, much more. Each area is fraught with certain challenges which I will describe in detail. I will describe how certain easy to understand, bite-size interventions can be used to overcome each challenge. And the best part is the tips in this course are specifically offered to assist the ADHD student.

I’m excited to take this journey with you. It is my hope that by the end of this enjoyable course, you will be well on your way to better grades with ADHD.
