Information for parents and carers of a child with dyslexia

At least 1 in 10 children in Scotland are dyslexic. This course is for anyone who thinks or knows that their child is dyslexic. You may know a little about dyslexia or nothing at all.

The course looks at areas such as your intuition as a parent the signs and early identification of dyslexia, your feelings as a parent, the common and less common characteristics of dyslexia and the strengths of dyslexia.

Processing difficulties such as working memory are also often associated with dyslexia and this course gives a brief overview of difficulties with specific areas of literacy, memory and organisation, numeracy difficulties and visual stress.

Sharon then talks you through your role in supporting your child at home, supporting self-esteem and multi-sensory support as well as some practical tips to support reading, homework and organisation.

Finally, the course looks at how dyslexia is identified, the importance of collaborative working between all agencies and parents and effective communication, such as during meetings with the school.

The course consists of a series of 5 lectures, some with downloadable materials, and then 2 recorded ‘Parent Masterclasses’.

If you would like more information after doing the course or have further questions, Dyslexia Scotland runs a free confidential Helpline which you can find on our website. We also have a range of downloadable leaflets and other resources.
