A Postcolonial Reading

Chinua Achebe's 1958 novel, Things Fall Apart, is one of the most celebrated and frequently taught novels all over the world. This course, meant for students as well as teachers, is meant to provide you a detailed discussion of the novel with a special focus on its cultural and historical context. Please note that these are not chapter summaries but rather thematic discussions of the chapters. You will learn some of the following things about the novel:

As a scholar of postcolonial studies I am always fascinated by the positive response I receive from students when I teach this novel, and I hope that if you take your time finishing this course, you will also enjoy it as much as my students do. I will also augment the course materials with references and links to additional video resources on my Youtube channel. Towards the end of the course syllabus, I will also provide you a list of resources for further viewing or reading.

If at any time during the course you find the materials wanting, or if you have additional questions, please reach out to me through the course messaging system and I will try to record a response to your questions.
