Doctoral Capstone Project

In this presentation you will learn the process I followed to implement a fall prevention and management protocol, what the protocol entailed, and how I advocated for geriatric fall patients, my EMS family, and the Occupational therapy profession all in one project.

Currently there is no intervention or follow up in place that ems can utilize for repeat callers for falls to prevent future falls, which presents a need to reduce ems resources being utilized for these types of calls and develop a better system for fall prevention. I also found in my research that falls increase with age, women tend to fall more than men, and most falls occur inside of the home. Interestingly, urban areas have the highest number of falls, but rural areas are more likely to transport for fall calls. At scene intervention, such as leaving a handout with the patients and/or their family about preventability of falls has shown to be benifical. These handouts usually include information about fall prevention and programs located in their community. These finding led me to believe that the need for home and independent living evaluations conducted by a professional are important. Through this capstone, I am advocating for the use of occupational therapists to address these issues.
