Welcome to the brief course about the history of the theatre in ancient times!

The theatre has entertained people for more than 2 000 years. But do you know how it all started? You might! However, in this course you will delve into the life of Greeks and Romans and see how the theatre was developing during the ancient times. You will discover the history of the theatre in the Ancient Greece and Roman Empire, you will know how the theatre began and functioned in its beginning, as well as gain information about the tragedy, comedy, satyre and people related to the ancient plays. In addition, you will learn some history of the Southern Europe. You might also learn some greek and latin words.

The course is divided into 7 lectures ( 4 about ancient Greece and 3 about the Roman Empire) and quizzes after each lecture. In the beginning you will discover the origins of the theatre and how it all begun, as well as what was the Cult of Dionysus and who was this Greek god. Then we will move to the lecture number 2 where I will talk about tragedy itself, Greek playwrights and about Aristotle who was a very important person to this genre. Thus, you will know what is mimesis and catharsis. In the 3rd lecture I will talk about comedy and its kinds. Also, I will briefly present you satire. Next I will illustrate for you the Greek theatre building in the 4th lecture. Then we will move to the next part which will be about the Roman Empire. In these last 3 lectures I will talk about the Roman celebrations and einterteinent style, as well as comedy, tragedy and their theatre building. But also about theatre in the Western and Eastern Roman Empire.
