Unwanted Intrusive thoughts

Have you ever had upsetting, distressing, frightening thoughts that enter your mind? – thoughts you don’t want – thoughts that scare you—and thoughts you can’t tell anyone, but they still come to haunt you?

While these are just thoughts, and most of us experience them in our day to day life without much disruption but for some experiencing intrusive thoughts can severely impair the person and their wellbeing and cause great distress. At times, they also lead the way to health conditions including certain physical symptoms without medical explanation.

Different people experience different types of these. Such thoughts can be related to sexual intrusive thoughts or simply sexual thoughts, aggressive thoughts or violent thoughts, and blasphemous thoughts. These are common obsessions or themes for people who experience intrusive thoughts. No matter what the underlying problem is, such thoughts are so embarrassing at times that the person cannot even share them with their family member, let alone be social worker or wellness professionals.

Association with mental health

Conventionally, it was believed that people who get diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorders, anxiety disorders, and post traumatic stress disorder experience such thoughts. A lot of times, anxiety and depression association can be found with such unwanted thoughts. But recent peer reviewed studies suggests that such intrusive thought are common in both people who have received diagnosis of a mental health disorder and those who do not. They can occur with or without repetitive behaviors, or compulsive behaviors.

Common practises to help oneself involves thought suppression, self care, medical help, or opting for crisis text line. One might also consult a mental health professional who might use cognitive behavioural therapy to modify the thinking pattern or core beliefs or psychoanalysis to uncover the underlying mental health condition or something else.
